Jim Spencer is a highly respected mastering engineer, producer, and mixer with over 30 years of experience in the music industry. His first freelance engineered album went straight to number one in the UK album charts — a strong start to a long and successful career.
A Lifelong Passion for Sound
From an early age, Jim developed a deep fascination with sound. He played piano and drums. He also spent hours listening to records, often with his head between his dad’s hi-fi speakers. This early obsession soon became a lifelong craft.
At 19 years old, Jim began working at the renowned Chapel Studios, a renowned and respected residential recording studio. It was there he met Johnny Marr, who soon invited him to Manchester to work on a project.
That project was the 2nd album for Marr’s band Electronic, featuring Bernard Sumner of New Order and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk. Since then, Jim has worked on a long list of top ten albums and singles.
His credits include New Order, Johnny Marr, The Charlatans, Robert Wyatt, The Cribs, Electronic, and The Vaccines, among many others.
In the early 2000’s, Johnny Marr asked Jim to master the b-side to one of his solo releases. That request marked the beginning of Jim’s journey into mastering. Since then, he has gone on to master a wide range of critically acclaimed records, both in the UK and internationally.
